Addressing the continuing significance of plant health in biosecurity.

 IPPC’s progress on the global protection of plant health. CPM-17 noted the final report on the implementation for the IPPC Strategic Framework 2020-2030 Development agenda items with expectations that further consultations with IPPC subsidiary bodies and technical consultations among Regional Plant Protection Organizations will be made.


The CPM also adopted the IPPC Communications Strategy 2023-2030 which will guide national and regional plant protection organizations (NPPOs, RPPOs) in their communication and advocacy planning.

The 2022 IPPC Secretariat budget and financial report was also presented. Other emerging topics for CPM that were noted included One Health, dispute settlement, partnership framework, observer policy, external cooperation with international organizations and collaboration with RPPOs' activities.

High-level event to mark the International Day of Plant Health 2025.

On May 12th, The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) , the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and the International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health (OIRSA) are organizing a high-level event to mark the International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) . The Day, under the theme “ The importance of plant health in One Health ”, aims to raise global awareness and action towards protecting plant health to help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect biodiversity and the environment and boost economic development. The high-level event is hosted by OIRSA which also hosts the first 3D technology that simulates management of pest outbreaks , providing a technologically advanced platform that will greatly enhance pest surveillance and response. Highlighting the urgent need for concerted action on a global scale.

  Our world is intricately interconnected, with plant products travelling all around the globe to fulfil different agricultural needs. As such, a constant relevant threat must be considered: biosecurity risks. Invasive pests and pathogens often hitch rides, destroying plant systems and damaging not only agricultural fields but natural ecosystems beyond. The economic toll of these damages amounts to a staggering USD 220 billion globally each yea r, highlighting the urgent need for concerted action on a global scale (FAO, 2024).
